Coastal garden - East Sussex

This property is an historic Grade 2 listed house on the coast near Rye. The construction of a new studio building within the garden required a re-imagining of the garden. To bring it back to life and integrate it with the house.

The design takes its inspiration from the shingle dunes and rugged wind-formed planting of the nearby nature reserve. Contrasting this with crisp modernist terraces that take their cue from the bold, simple form of the new studio.

A combination of black painted fencing and natural palings pay homage to both the coastal aesthetic and also to the history of the property. Blocks of evergreen shrub planting provide screening and depth to the space. As well as providing dramatic contrast to waves of grasses and long flowering herbaceous plants that create an extended period of interest throughout the year. This project is currently under construction for completion in 2024.
