New Build Garden - Wiltshire

Status | Complete

This is a rural garden that was designed and constructed in conjunction with a new build property. Situated with fields and views out to the surrounding hills on one side the ‘sense of place’ was guided by its mature trees and the surrounding landscape. I was brought on board in the early stages of planning and was able to advise on the siting of the house to maximise the plot as well as carry out the design and delivery of the garden.

A beautiful mature copper beech dominates the rear garden, setting the theme for a woodland edge planting with generous beds to bring interest throughout the year. The structure is formal with a semi-circular end to the lawn that lengthens the garden making it feel more spacious with shade-tolerant naturalistic planting including Hydrangeas and Rhododendrons that harmonise with the views beyond.  Cloud-pruned hedging on the boundary with the field echoes the hills beyond and borrows the surrounding landscape. Against the house planting beds filled with scented shrubs including Daphne and Lavender divide the terrace creating spaces for both intimate dining and seating areas that look out across the lawn from amongst the planting.

To the side of the house a new rill pond surrounded by planting provides a focal point from the windows of the kitchen and the garden room and creates a sense of space. Planting is designed to create interest throughout the year from spring bulbs through to late season perennials and shrubs.

The front garden and parking area has a greater level of formality with pleached hornbeam delivering a sense of arrival whilst also screening a neighbouring property. A pattern in cobbles and gravel marks out the parking courtyard which combined with the mix of evergreen and deciduous planting provides both seasonal interest and year-round structure.
